About Carencro
Today, Carencro is known for its thriving Cajun and Creole cultures that embrace and preserve the unique food, music, language, customs and religious practices handed down by their ancestors. A section of the town was designated as a Cultural District by the Louisiana Cultural District Program in 2015.
History of Carencro
The first known settler in the Carencro, Louisiana area was an Acadian named Louis Pierre Arceneaux – who arrived in 1765 and was a native of Beaubassin, Nova Scotia. The population grew slowly but steadily, and by 1810 there were 50 families in the area. First called St. Pierre, the town was renamed Carencro in the late 1800s. The name comes from a Native American legend that in old times, a large number of “carrion crows” (vultures, called “carencro” in French) came to the area to feast on a fish die-off.
