About Lafayette
Lafayette is often referred to as the “Hub City” because of its prominence as an early railroad stop and business corridor in the heart of the Acadiana region. It’s also known as the unofficial capital of “Cajun country” and is renown for its thriving Cajun and Creole cultures. Over the years, Lafayette has become famous for its unique culture, fantastic food, a wide variety of festivals, enthusiastic support of the arts and as a regional hub of the oil and gas industry.
History of Lafayette
The area that became known as Lafayette, Louisiana was first occupied by Native Americans of the Attakapas tribe in the early 1700s. By the mid-18th century, colonists including Acadians, French and Spanish had established settlements in the area. The first town was laid out in the early 1820s and was called St. Jean du Vermilionville – later shortened to Vermilionville. In 1884 the town was renamed Lafayette in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette –- a hero of the American and French Revolutions.
