About New Iberia
New Iberia is renown for its unique Cajun and Creole culture, traditions and cuisine. It’s also home to Shadows-on-the-Teche (a famous antebellum home), Conrad Rice Mill (American’s oldest operating rice mill) and its restored historic downtown area. The area is also home to world-famous Tabasco pepper sauce and the Jungle Gardens located on Avery Island.
History of New Iberia
New Iberia, Louisiana was founded by Spaniards in 1779 – but it soon became home to many French Acadians (Cajuns) who were driven from their homes in Nova Scotia by British troops. The town was originally called Iberia (the ancient name for Spain) – but the name was changed to New Iberia when Iberia Parish was created in 1868.
